Westhill boys hoops pounds Grimes, clinches league title

Warriors overwhelm Cobras' defense for season sweep

— Bishop Grimes had no answer for Westhill’s Jordan Roland and Tyler Reynolds in the host Warriors 74-50 boys basketball victory on Wednesday night.

The duo handily outscored the Cobras in the first quarter and ultimately combined for 43 points as Westhill clinched the OHSL Liberty National division regular-season crown and swept Grimes in the season series.

“That’s probably as well as we can play,” Warriors head coach Kevin King said.

Roland and Reynolds were just two cogs in a Westhill offensive machine that clicked on all cylinders for the first time this season.

As he has done many times this winter, Roland led the state Class B no. 10-ranked Warriors (15-2, 14-1) with 25 points, making all eight of his free throws, while Reynolds scored a career-high 18 points and drained four 3-pointers.

Jeff Lobello added nine points. Sean DeKay chipped in seven points, all in the fourth quarter, and Kevin Karleski had six points for Westhill, who shot 19-for-20 from the foul line. Karleski also made a slew of nifty backdoor passes, operating the offense from the high post throughout the game.

“Kevin made some great passes,” King said. “Guys made the cuts and they did what they were supposed to do when the defense plays certain ways. It’s kind of a read and react offense. There’s really not a lot of set plays so those guys really deserve a lot of credit for reading the defense and reacting the way they did.”

Casey Evans paced Bishop Grimes (9-7. 8-6) with 12 points and Jon Carnegie scored 10 points as the Warriors held the Cobras to just 16 second-half points.

“To beat them you’re going to have to step up your game,” Bishop Grimes head coach Kevin Haven said.

“You’re going to have to match that. We didn’t tonight. We didn’t have that intensity tonight.”
