Nearly two decades old, the Symetra Tour’s Credit Union Classic has turned into a late-summer fixture on the Central New York golf calendar. And once again, the future stars of women’s golf are heading to Drumlins Country Club’s East course this weekend, battling for $100,000 in prize money and improving their odds of being one of the 10 players that, at season’s end, will earn an LPGA Tour card.

West Genesee girls wins seventh state lacrosse title

Senior-heavy Wildcats pull away, beat West Islip

What it came down to, for the West Genesee girls lacrosse team, was the simple idea that 17 seniors, bitterly disappointed a season ago, did not want to go through that disappointment again. And the Wildcats didn't have to, riding its hunger and determination all the way to the seventh state Class A championship in program history, attained Saturday afternoon at SUNY-Cortland with a convincing 15-10 victory over West Islip.

Solvay softball repeats Class B sectional title

Bearcats score early, often in 11-3 romp over Adirondack

This time around, the Solvay softball team was not going to wait to decide matters. Having seen its season nearly end against Altmar-Parish-Williamstown in the previous round, the Bearcats jumped all over Adirondack in Monday night's Section III Class B final at the Gillette Road complex in Cicero, eventually prevailing 11-3 to bring home a second consecutive sectional championship.

Even as it was putting up big run totals throughout the spring, the Solvay softball team knew that, at some unknown point, it would have to grind out a win or two if it wanted to go as far as it wanted. That tense moment arrived in Wednesday's Section III Class B semifinal at the Gillette Road complex in Cicero, where a series of escapes by pitcher Jackie Gardner, and a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, allowed the top-seeded Bearcats to squeeze past no. 4 seed Altmar-Parish-Williamstown 2-1.
