The CNY Elite Lacrosse Club earned third place in the U18 International Festival of Lacrosse at Edinburgh, Scotland, last month. But the 24 girls from the Cicero-North Syracuse, Baldwinsville, Liverpool and Jordan-Elbridge school districts have brought back more than just a bronze medal — they’ve returned with new friends and new memories, too.

At the school where he built a coaching legend, Mike Messere now has a permanent honor. In a ceremony Saturday during the annual John Pepper Memorial Lacrosse Tournament, the turf field at West Genesee High School was formally dedicated as "Mike Messere Field" as a large contingent of current and former players joined in the proceedings.

Just a few days after the Fourth of July, West Genesee boys golf stars Dylan Plis and Sean Stanistreet did their own bit of patriotic duty. Together, Plis and Stanistreet were part of the United States team that took on a side from Canada in the North America Cup, a match-play tournament that took place at Weston Golf & Country Club in Ontario.

Dream Factory of Syracuse to host annual kickball tournament fundraiser

To help make a dream come true for a chronically ill child, all you have to do is play a game of kickball. The Dream Factory of Syracuse is hosting its fourth annual Kicks for Kids Kickball Tournament Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Syracuse Kickball Park on Oswego Road in Liverpool. The co-ed tournament, which begins at 10 a.m., lasts all day and features food, games and live entertainment (donated by RMD Premier DJ Ryno), as well as raffles, a silent auction, a dunk tank and a bounce house for kids.

More than a generation ago, just as the New York State Public High School Athletic Association started to hand out championships in softball, Solvay earned the Class B state crown in 1986. Nearly three decades later, the Bearcats had a second chance to add a second title to that long-ago prize –but Saturday afternoon’s title game at the Moreau Recreational Park in South Glens Falls ended in the same unforgiving manner as it did in that same venue 12 months earlier.
