Late field goal helps Westhill improve to 3-2
Once at 1-2, the Westhill football team has surged all the way to the brink of a Section III Class B playoff berth. Nothing is locked up yet, but the Warriors’ playoff chances improved with a hard-fought 3-0 victory over state Class B no. 19-ranked Chittenango Friday night, a game that had a season’s worth of mistakes by both sides before a kick, and a call, decided matters.
Kanoza, Dunning each win two races for Wildcats
Only the West Genesee girls swim team stood between Cicero-North Syracuse and its quest to secure the CNY Counties League regular-season championship. But when those two sides got together Thursday night in Camillus, the Wildcats, despite two race wins apiece from Becca Kanoza and Kaitlin Dunning, could not match the depth of the Northstars, who prevailed 102-84 and now had the league crown to itself.
Wildcats edge Auburn by single shot, 404-405

Warriors take five sets, hand Lakers first defeat
What a difference a few weeks, and a bit of home-court advantage, can make. Westhill’s girls volleyball team, whose only blemish this season was a straight-set loss at Cazenovia on Sept. 17, had a far different outcome when it hosted the Lakers Tuesday night, making two different comebacks to prevail in five sets and hand Cazenovia its first defeat of the season.
Warriors' long shutout streak ends; Marcellus blanks J-E
Now the Westhill boys soccer team is quite aware of the main obstacle to reclaiming the Section III Class B title – namely, one opponent that still holds the crown. Having gone unbeaten against everyone else, the Warriors still haven’t solved defending sectional champion Skaneateles in either of their two meetings, including last Thursday night’s home game, a 2-1 defeat to the Lakers.
Solvay breaks four-game skid, tops ITC
In a span of just two weeks, a Westhill football team headed in the wrong direction has turned around. With Friday night's 35-7 romp over visiting Marcellus, the Warriors improved to 3-2 and have given itself a chance to still control its own fate in the Class B West division since it faces the top two teams, Chittenango (4-1) and Homer (5-0), to close out the regular season.
Wildcats extend win streak to 10 straight matches
Once the West Genesee boys golf team toppled Cicero-North Syracuse Blue from the top of the CNY Counties League standings with a head-to-win win on Sept. 16, it now had to withstand the challenges from everyone chasing them.
Solvay, West Genny remain winless in 2015
When the Marcellus football team hosted Cortland last Friday night, the game’s meaning went far beyond the scoreboard and how it affected the Class B West division standings. For this game, the Mustangs donned green jerseys with camouflage numbers on the front and back, and fans wore T-shirts, purchased at $10 apiece, to raise money for the Wounded Warriors Project, an organization that helps war veterans acclimate back to civilian life.
Ludden goes to 3-1 in wild win over LaFayette
Everyone in the Jordan-Elbridge program had pointed toward Friday night's game against Herkimer. Eagles win at Weedsport; Gaelic Knights top Bishop Grimes
Just on the surface, a Class C football team meeting a Class D opponent offers an advantage to the larger school. But Weedsport is not an ordinary Class D program, and Jordan-Elbridge knew it, so when the Eagles ventured on the road Friday night, it was ready, and timely defensive plays, including a pair of late Kyle Humberstone interceptions, produced a 28-14 victory over the Warriors.
Warriors rebound from opening loss to Cortland
Though the gap between Westhill and Solvay on the football field has narrowed, it's still present, and the Warriors still carry the advantage. In a tense battle Friday night, Westhill held off the Bearcats, 17-15, bouncing back from a season-opening 26-0 shutout loss to Cortland, and watching Solvay fall to 0-2.
