Whether the West Genesee girls swim team has the goods to avenge last fall’s Section III championship defeat to Jamesville-DeWitt will get decided next Wednesday night. What isn’t in doubt, though, is the hold the Wildcats has over the CNY Counties League, which it reinforced Tuesday in Camillus when it rolled past Cicero-North Syracuse 102-76 in a first-place showdown.

Each time the Solvay and Westhill girls volleyball teams get together, the intensity cannot be masked or contained. Better yet, the quality of play is terrific, as was displayed in Tuesday night’s showdown at Westhill’s gym, where the Bearcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in sets, missed out on multiple chances to close out the match, but hung in there and survived a five-set classic to beat the Warriors.

Throughout a tough September slate, the West Genesee football team got a good look at two different Section III Class AA title contenders, and could not do much against either of them. During Friday night's game against Corcoran, the Wildcats were held without an offensive touchdown, and it led to a 20-7 defeat to the Cougars and an overall record of 2-2.

Thanks mainly to a career-best performance from Kyle Matousek, the Jordan-Elbridge football team showed that it could absorb a loss - and roar back to form. Matousek amassed 261 yards on 24 carries, scoring four touchdowns, and helped the Eagles romp past Bishop Ludden 56-14, keeping the Gaelic Knights winless in 2014 and improving its own record to 3-1.

Even when separated by more than 50 miles and two different leagues, the Marcellus and Westhill girls soccer teams still end up tied together. On a wondrous Tuesday evening, as the state Class B no. 9-ranked Warriors edged past state no. 2-ranked Cazenovia 2-1 in overtime, the Mustangs beat Christian Brothers Academy 3-1, giving long-time head coach Laurie Updike her 300th career victory.
